Lisa Hunter
As the Director of ISEE, Lisa oversees and actively participates in the development and implementation of ISEE initiatives, programs, and partnerships. She also leads ISEE’s major initiatives, such as the Akamai Workforce Initiative. Lisa has been ISEE’s Director since its inception in 2008, and prior to that directed the Center for Adaptive Optics education and professional development initiatives, where ISEE originated. Lisa provides the vision and leadership for ISEE’s growth and sustained programs. She leads fundraising, partnership development, communication, and serves as Principal Investigator on ISEE grants. Lisa is a full-time staff member of University of California Observatories.
Candace Brown Pacheco
Candice began her work with ISEE as a consultant for the Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO) education and professional development initiatives. She was an early developer (2002) of the ISEE Professional Development Program (PDP), was a core member of the development and instructional team for many years, and served as the PDP Director in 2023-25. Candice collaborated with Anne Metevier on early ASTRAL programming and has also championed the role of alumni in ISEE programs by leading the Leadership Institute 2 in 2023. Candice has a doctoral degree in educational psychology with an emphasis in STEM learning and has taught and advised graduate students at numerous UC campuses, including UCSC. Candice is the Co-Director of ISEE’s AstroTech program, leading a team of national instructors and partners. In her previous role as director of the NSF CILS Center at UCSC, Candice worked with Lisa Hunter, Claire Max, and Rod Ogawa to establish ISEE. Currently, she assists with fundraising, partnership development, and program design at ISEE. Candice is a full-time staff member of University of California Observatories.
Chriselle Nagata
Chriselle is ISEE’s Program Manager for the Akamai Workforce Initiative. She manages all aspects of implementing the Akamai Internship Program, including recruiting applicants and mentors, selection and placement, and all aspects of the internship experience. She serves as a core instructor and coach for the Akamai PREP course and communication strand, as well as for the Akamai Mentor Workshop. Chriselle is stationed on Maui at ISEE’s long-time partner, the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, where she was a mechanical engineer and technical supervisor for ten years before her position with ISEE, and works full-time for the University of California Observatories.
Nicole Mattacola
Beginning in 2015, Nicole has coordinated all events big and small that support the programmatic goals of ISEE. She implements and synchronizes the logistics of the many program workshops, symposia, retreats, conferences, presentations, faculty meetings, and partnership activities both on and off campus, and provides event support. Nicole facilitates ISEE program application and selection processes, and serves as the point of contact with participants from registration through wrap-up. She provides the main administrative support for ISEE with scheduling meetings, processing travel reimbursements and assisting with procurement functions. Nicole is a full-time staff member at University of California Observatories.
Jerome Shaw
Jerome is Associate Director of ISEE’s Akamai Workforce Initiative. He advises on strategic planning and partnerships, and is actively involved in curriculum development, evaluation, and assessment of the initiative. He serves as a core instructor and coach for the Akamai Internship Program PREP course and communication strand. He has led the development of ISEE’s mentoring program and the development of new tools for supporting and assessing student projects in the STEM workplace. Jerome is an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Education at UC Santa Cruz.
Anne Metevier
Anne Metevier consults with ISEE on programs including the Professional Development Program (PDP) and is assisting ISEE with initial planning for STARs, a major effort that is building up education programs involving University of California’s Lick Observatory. Anne has been a key author on several ISEE publications, was a champion for ISEE’s nomination for a PAESMEM award (which ISEE won), and is co-editor of two volumes of papers on the PDP. As a past participant, instructor-developer, and program manager of the PDP, Anne is keenly interested in supporting alumni of ISEE’s programs. To this end, she co-organized two PDP reunion conferences and helped to develop multiple ISEE Chapters. In addition to her work with ISEE, Anne is a lecturer in astronomy and physics at Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior College and has a background in astrophysics research.
Cindy Giebink
Cindy Giebink works on ISEE’s information management systems, including websites, databases, and online applications. She has been involved in the Akamai Internship Program for many years, and has mentored a number of interns in software projects through the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy (Maui) where she developed software for instrument control and database development. Cindy works part-time as an independent contractor for ISEE.
